Do you remember learning to ride a bike?
Yes I remember learning to ride. It happened outside some garages at the top of our road. Falling of on concrete floors is not to be recommended; a nice gentle grassy slope is much better. I also wish the balance bikes which are popular now were around then.
What is your dream bike?
My dream bike is a Specialized SWORKS Roubaix at £8500, no harm in dreaming.
What was your dream job when you were a child?
I always wanted a horse when I was little (something to do with Black Beauty being on the telly maybe). Probably just wanted to be a Cowboy like most of my friends at the time.
Do you like cycling as a spectator sport?
Cycling on the telly is great, but I think unless you ride yourself you can't fully realize the supreme effort the top guys and girls put in. Like any top sportsperson they make a very difficult thing look easy.
Is Paul's Bikes all yours?
I've now been at the shop for about 27/28 years, started as a Saturday boy then full time when I left school. At the time it was called C J frost and Son and it then changed to Paul's Bikes when I took it on in 2005 when Mr Frost retired and wanted the shop name to change. As I had been there for so long it seemed logical to call it Paul's so the customers would realize there was some continuity the shop.
What is a typical working day?
There isn't one which is probably why I'm still here. It's so varied - each customer is different and repairs can range from a simple puncture to a full frame change and wheel rebuild. The most common request is still, 'Can you mend a puncture for me?' which of course we're very happy to do.
Can we commission someone to paint you a picture?
I'm not up on my artists I'm afraid, but some sort of caricature of the family would be funny.
Are you as handy with a paintbrush as you are with a bike pump?
Art has never been my strong point I'm afraid although my daughter seems to have discovered some skill with a paint brush and is doing well at school with it.
What does Paul's Bikes offer?
